Antique Lidded Pewter Footed Desk Organizer Box Multiple Compartments W/ Inkwell

  • $ 247.77

Description: An antique pewter low profile desk organizer box. The desk organizer has two hinged lids creating two lidded halves, one consisting of a single compartment while the second half has 3 small compartments. One of these compartments accommodates a squared ink bottle and is fitted with a holed plate making it an inkwell. a second compartment has what looks like a sander to dry the ink. The compartment in the middle is free. The opposite large compartment was possibly used to store quills. The common hinge for the two lids is in the middle of the top. The organizer has four pewter round feet attached to the bottom corners of the piece. The piece has acquired a nice light warm gray age patina and looks great. A nice antique pewter piece, which would make a nice addition to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Unknown, but possibly sometime in the late 1700s or 1800s.

Origin: Was purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The box measures ~6 1/4" by ~4" with the lids closed and is ~1 7/8" high. The piece weighs about 2 pounds.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Condition: The box is in very good condition given its age and utilitarian function. It has no breaks, cracks, or repairs. The piece has a light warm gray age patina and shows a lot of character. It shows some minor pitting, scratches, dings, and some stains. The edges of the lids are slightly bent at the corners and at the hinge, so are the legs with a couple bent inwards. The bottom has a faded number 615, which we believe was the number of the piece within the previous owner's collection. The bottom also shows minor signs of pitting. The glass inkbottle is intact, but we believe it is not original to the piece but rather a later add on. The hinge works properly and is intact. This is a very nice antique pewter desk organizer box with an inkwell and sander, which may or may not be original to the piece, that has been around for a long time and survived. A very nice piece worthy of a spot in your collection of antique pewter. It would probably benefit from a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Please see photo for additional condition information.
