Description: A beautiful Mary Gregory painted cranberry colored glass powder box with brass hinged closure. The box, which is made of blown glass in cranberry clear color has a painting, on top of the lid, depicting a child standing in what looks like a garden with trees behind her and plant in front of her. She is wearing pants to her knees and a short sleeve shirt. She has short hair and is painted in great and beautiful details. The sides of the box is also decorated with a plant motif all along the circumference. The bottom of the box shows depression in the center where the smoothed out pontil resulting from the blowing wand was located. A great looking glass powder box from mid to late 19th century to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain but generally sometime between 1860 and 1890.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Size: Measures ~3 1/8" in diameter at the base and ~3 7/8" in diameter at the top. The box is ~2 3/4" high with the lid closed. The piece weighs slightly about 9 ounces.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice piece of antique glass with beautiful shape, coloring and design, which would make a great addition to your collection.

Condition: The box is in excellent condition despite of being over 150 years old. It was obviously well cherished and taken care of all these years. It has no breaks, no chips, no cracks and no repairs. The painting is still well preserved with minimum losses to the coloring if any. The hinge and the closure are intact and function as expected. The bottom has some scuff marks where it was dragged on hard surfaces through the years. Other than that the glass has some minor surface scratches and the brass closure has darkened with age and could probably use a good cleaning to bring out its original beauty. Finally, the glass has some small air bubbles dispersed through it. Be that as it may the piece is solid, beautiful and in great shape. A worthy addition to your collection.
