Description: Antique silverplate stamp box. The stamp box has three compartments in the interior and is finished with a gold wash on the inside. The compartments are slated upwards for easy access to the stamps. The box has a hinged lid with a repousse design. Actually, the entire exterior of the box has a beautiful repousse floral design. The lid has a central cartouche or escutcheon which is monogrammed but we are unable to make out the letters. The box has acquired a nice dark age patina or as we like to say it is soiled and could use a good cleaning to bring out its beauty, but we leave that to the new owner. Pleases carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but most likely sometime in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, could be earlier.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The box was made in Meriden Connecticut.

Size: Measures ~3 1/8" by ~1 3/4" by ~1" and weighs ~4.5 ounces.

Maker: Meriden Silver Plate Co.

Marks: Marked on the bottom with the Meriden Silver Plate company mark consisting of a horse within an oval and having the words "Meriden Silver Plate Co. Quadruple Plate" surrounding the horse.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful and most interesting antique stamp box. It would make a great addition to your small box or stamp box collection.

Condition: The stamp box is in excellent condition with no major problems. The hinged lid works great and the box has no breaks or repairs. It has lost some of the gold gilt in the interior as it must have seen quite a bit of use over the years. As we indicated earlier the box is monogrammed but we are unable to make out what the letters are. It also has surface scratches, some soiling, and general wear to the exterior commensurate with the pieces age and utilitarian function. The box has acquired a nice dark age patina or as we like to say it is soiled and could use a good cleaning to bring out its beauty, but we leave that to the new owner.
