Antique Painted Cast Iron Bookends Lion in Front of Gate

  • $ 139.99

Description:  A pair of antique cast iron bookends. The bookends are cast in the form of a lion laying down in front of metal gate surrounded by brick columns. The lion is laying on the ground and blocking the entrance.  The gate is colored in a golden yellow tone, the columns holding the gate are red, with the top being yellow in color. The lion itself is a dark brown color as is the ground below it with some golden highlights at the edges.  The casting is very well done and shows great details from the features of the lion's face, the details of his mane, the paws, the details of the bricks, and the metal gate. The bookends retain most of their original color and have beautiful details.  The bottom of the base is covered with green felt that is very stained, soiled, and show some losses. The back of the pieces is painted with a cream color and is stamped with the number 17 for both pieces. Just a pair of beautiful bookends. Please view the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice pair of bookends with a beautiful and very desirable turn of the 20th century design.

Condition:  The bookends are in excellent condition with no breaks, repairs or dings that we could find. They do have some losses to the paint. In addition one of them has remnants of a white paint on the back and on top of one of the brick columns. Both pieces have some losses to the original paint, but all of this does not distract from the beauty and quality of the pieces. Please see photos for additional details.
