Antique Schofield Dark Brown Lead Glazed Redware Creamer Spout & Applied Handle

  • $ 79.99

Description: A early 20th century dark brown lead glazed redware creamer attributed to Henry Schofield Pottery in Chester County Pennsylvania/Cecil County Maryland. This glazed creamer has a flat round base with slightly rounded sides rising to a shoulder which flares outwards to a plain rim. The shoulder is decorated with two raised parallel rings. The creamer has a spout and an applied strap handle. The piece is glazed inside and out with the bottom being also glazed. The piece has the typical Schofield dark brown/black foot ring. The piece also has the usual rough surface again typical of Schofield primitive pottery. A nice antique piece of redware from around the Mason-Dixon line. Please view photos carefully as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but sometime in the period of 1910-1925.

Origin: Chester County, Southeastern Pennsylvania or Cecil County Maryland along the Mason-Dixon line.

Size: The piece ~2 3/4" in diameter at the base, ~3 1/8" diameter at the top, ~4 1/2" at its widest including the spout and handle, and is ~4" high. The piece weighs over 13 ounces.

Maker: Most likely Henry Schofield Jr. of Schofield Pottery.

Marks: Unmarked.

Condition: Creamer is in good condition given its age. It has no crack, breaks, or repairs. The piece has general crazing to the glaze, which gives it coloring and the rough surface makes the crazing very hard to see but it is there. The piece has several glaze chips, which we try to show in the photos, mostly along the edge of the rim and a couple of smaller ones along the side. It also it has a small shallow chip at the spout, which we also show in the last photo. Other than that, the piece has several of the manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, unglazed spots, and uneven spots. All these issues can be seen in the photos and as can be seen do not distract from the beauty of the piece. Please see photos for additional condition information.
