Antique Silver colored Cast Iron Foxy Grandpa Still Penny Bank PG Wing or Hubley

  • $ 109.99

Description: An antique cast iron bank in the form of a man standing tall wearing a jacket and a bowl hat. The man has his hands in his jacket pocket with his arms bent to his side. The man's clothing is painted in silver while his face is colored in light pink. This is the bank known as Foxy Grandpa or simply Grandpa bank. This bank was manufactured by PG Wing of Chicago, Illinois in 1900 and by Hubley of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1920. We are not certain which version this example is but it is definitely old. The bank, which is silver in color, shows grandpa standing in a sexy pose with his hands at his waist. He is wearing gold rim eyeglasses, red necktie, and has a big smile on his face. The bank is made of two pieces held together with a screw. We opened the bank and found the number 64 stamped on one of the halves (see the last photo). The bank is all original except for possibly the screw and his mouth, which may have been repainted. The bank shows considerable paint losses throughout especially on the face, the back and the knee of grandpa's left leg. It has no breaks or repairs. Please see page 77 in Andy and Susan Moor's Book "The Penny Bank Book: Collecting Still Banks" Published by Schiffer Books in 1984, for a photo of a similar example (bank number 320). Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Ca 1900-1920.

Origin: Made in the USA and purchased at an auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The bank measures ~5 1/2" high and is ~2 5/8" at its widest. The piece weighs about 10 ounces.

Maker: Either PG Wing of Chicago, IL or Hubley of Lancaster, PA, not certain which one but both companies made the bank.

Marks: The number 64 stamped on one of the halves of the bank (see last photo).

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice penny bank that is in very good condition. It would make a nice addition to your collection.

Condition: The bank is in good condition. It has no breaks or repairs. The bank is all original (with the possible exception of the screw holding it together which maybe a replacement and the red coloring of the mouth which may have been repainted at a later date) and shows paint losses throughout (estimate about 70% of original paint remaining). The paint losses throughout especially on the face, the back, and the knee of grandpa's left leg. A very nice and relatively scarce bank, which would make a nice addition to your collection. Please view photos to appreciate the beauty of the bank and for additional condition information.
