Antique Tin ABC Plate Nursery Rhyme, Mary Had a Little Lamb Its Fleece Was White as Snow Everywhere Mary Went The Lamb Was Sure To Go

Description: An Antique ferrous metal or tin ABC Plate. The plate is stamped and shows a girl walking with a purse in her hand with a lamb following and a tree in its flat center. The center rises with slightly curved short side walls to a flat rim. The plate's flat rim is slightly slanted towards the center. The rim displays the alphabet from A to Z. The center has the famous nursery rhyme which goes "Mary Had a Little Lamb Its Fleece Was White as Snow Everywhere Mary Went The Lamb Was Sure To Go" surrounding the image in the center. This plate has seen quite a bit of use and lost most of its finish showing the bare metal throughout the top of the plate. The bottom of the plate is better preserved and shows what the plate must have looked like when it was new. Additional Information: Interestingly, 'Mary had a little lamb' is an American nursery rhyme first published by the Boston publishing firm Marsh, Capen & Lyon, as an poem by Sarah Josepha Hale on May 24, 1830, and was possibly inspired by an actual incident. The rhyme was the first audio recorded by Thomas Edison on his newly invented phonograph in 1877. Blues musicians Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan both recorded the song in the late 20th century.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice piece of Americana that would display nicely in any collection.

Condition: The plate is in good condition given its age and utilitarian function. As we indicated above the top of the plate lost most of its finish (the tin) and shows the darkened rough surface of the metal. The plate has some minor dings but these are minor and do not truly affect the integrity or look of the plate.
