Beautiful 1698 Large Silver Coin Italian Papal State Piastra Pope Innocent XII NGC VF 25

Description: A beautiful and large silver coin from the Italian Papal States. This is the 1698 AN VIII Piastra struck during the times of Pope Innocent XII for the first anniversary of the peace of Ryswick. The coin depicts the image of the bust of pope Innocent XII facing right on the obverse with the legend "INNOCEN XII.P.M.AN.VIII" surrounding the image. The reverse shows St Peter blessing crowd and is surrounded by the legend "GRATIA.VOBIS.ET.PAX.MVLTIPLICETVR" and having the date 1698 on the bottom. The coin should weigh ~32 grams of silver and measures ~45 mm in diameter. The coin is graded by NGC as very fine VF25. It comes in a plastic slab and is so marked. This is the rather scarce Anno VIII variety. It is beautiful and has a nice portrait of the Pontiff with honest wear. Size and Weight: The coin weighs ~32 grams silver and measures ~45 mm in diameter.

References: This Berman 2227 and DAV 4107.

Condition: The coin is graded as very fine 25 or VF 25 by NGC and comes in a plastic slab so marked. This example is the AN VIII variety which was struck in 1698 to commemorate the first anniversary of the peace treaty of Ryswick which ended the 9-year war between France and the Grand Alliance of England, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire and the United Provinces. It has a nice portrait of the Pontiff with honest wear and great preservation of the details. It is nicely toned and has great eye appeal. It would make a nice addition to your collection.
