Description: A beautiful high relief bronze medal showing the bust of Pierre Paul Rubens By Hart on the obverse. The medal Commemorates the erection of the Rubens monument in Antwerp, Belgium in 1840. The obverse has a beaded edge surrounding the raised image of Rubens in magnificent relief. This famous Hart image of the bust of Rubens wearing his famous hat and a chain with an open shirt, was used on many different issues of medals, both bronze and pewter commemorating the event. The reverse indicates that this medal was issued by the Royal Society of Sciences, Letters, and Arts along the edge. It has the legend "ANVERS ELEVE UN MONUMENT A RUBENS 1840" which translated "Antwerp Raises a Monument to Rubens 1840." The medal is ~45 mm in diameter and weighs ~43.2 gm. The medal is signed Hart F. on the bottom of Rubens' bust. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Weight and Size: The medal weighs ~43.2 grams and is ~45 millimeters in diameter.
Condition: The medal is in excellent condition with a minimum number of scratches and dings. If it was a coin I would have graded it as Extremely Fine or much better. The medal has minimum wear and is nicely toned. The medal has a couple of minor dings in the field on both sides and several dings to the edge, all of which can be seen in the photos. Other than that, this is a beautiful medal commemorating one of masters of Baroque era painting. Please view photos for additional condition information and to appreciate the beauty of the piece.
