Beautiful Majolica Plate Raised Design on Light Blue Basketweave Background Purple Grapes with Green Colored Vines GS Zell 2230
Description: An beautiful and very decorative German majolica plate. The plate which is light blue or turquoise in color has a raised design depicting bunches of purple grapes on a vine with green grape leaves. This design is on top of a basketweave or basket weave raised design background, just great looking. The vine has green leaves and purple grape bunches hanging. The back of the plate is undecorated but is marked with numbers and with indication of the maker and its origin. The back has a raised foot with a flat area within it. Just a beautiful decorative majolica plate. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely mid to late 20th century.
Origin: Baden Germany.
Size: Measures ~6 5/8" in diameter and is ~3/4" high. The plate weighs about 8 ounces.
Maker: GS Zell of Baden Germany.
Marks: Marked with the words GS Zell within a drawing of a cup with the word Germany under it on the back of the plate. It also has the number 2230 stamped into the back.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and very interesting piece of Majolica that is in great condition.
Condition: The plate is in very good condition with no cracks, hairlines, chips, repairs, or crazing to the glaze. It does have an area where the glaze did not fully flow and you can see the unglazed pottery on the foot of the plate (see the last photo).
