Breininger Pottery Sample Redware Deep Ruffle Bowl Tobacco Spit Décor By Zieber
Description: A nice glazed redware deep bowl with a ruffled edge by the Breininger Pottery. The bowl, which is marked "SAMPLE" on the bottom has beautiful dark brown tobacco spit decoration over the orangish-brown background coloring. It has a flat round base with rounded sides rising to a ruffled edge. The bowl is decorated with an incised line at the shoulder right under the edge. The bowl is glazed both on the inside and outside but not on the bottom, where it shows the color of unglazed redware and where it is marked with incised lettering "SAMPLE/BREININGER/POTTERY/ROBESONIA, Pa/1997/G. Zieber". This type of decorated redware pottery is very much in the Pennsylvania Dutch style common in southeastern Pennsylvania specifically in Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, and Lancaster counties. This particular piece was most likely made by Mr. Zieber, one of Lester Breininger associates at the pottery, as a sample for a potential buyer. Interesting and rather unusual piece, says sample, which we have never seen in all of our years of collecting and dealing in Breininger pottery. It would make a nice addition to your collection. Please carefully view photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
