Chalk Dog Figurine, Antique Bulldog Standing on All Fours, His Head Turned in Proud Look

  • $ 250.00

Description:  An antique nice size chalk figurine of a dog. The figurine shows what looks like a bulldog standing on all four legs with its head turned to the left and its black ears droopy. The dog has a black mouth and nose, black tail, black eyes with yello surrounding it and black eyebrows, and black ears. It is wearing a collar that still maintains some of its original gray coloring on the back, but lost most of its coloring in the front. The dog used to have a greenish gray coloring over a pink or orange background, This color scheme can be seen on the back of the figurine (second photo). The dog stands on a black base. It has lost quite a of its original color especially on the front. The figurine is hollow. The casting of the dog is done in a primitive manner and does not show many details especially in the body. The dog could have been a toy or a primitive decorating piece. This dog appears to be a de-accession from a museum or a major collection as evidenced by the number written on the inside of the base (698.51.69) it also has an old red framed paper price tag indicating that it cost 3.00 once upon a time, probably in the 1800s. Please carefully review photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but most likely mid to late 1800's.

Origin: Uncertain, but most likely USA.

Size: Measures ~6 3/4" at its highest and measures 6" by 3 1/4" at the base.  The piece weighs about 13 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Marked with the number 698.51.69, which we believe it is the pieces number in the collection where it was. The number looks very much like the typical museum inventory number.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a great antique chalk dog figurine that has been around for over 100 years, it is a miracle that it is still intact. Please see photos to appreciate beauty and condition of the figurine.

Condition: The figurine is in very good condition given its age. It has no breaks, chips in the body of the dog, hairlines, or repairs. There are small chips all along the bottom edge of the base. It also has scratches all over the body, some of which are deeper than others, and wear commensurate with its age and function as a toy. The piece has lost quite a bit of its original coloring, however, this seems to give it great character. Please view photos to appreciate the beauty and condition of this great piece.
