Description:  A beautiful very fine or much better Banknote from South Africa. This is the South African Reserve Bank Five Pounds note issued 11 November 1948. The banknote is light green with brown and orange on the front. The front displays the portrait of Jan Van Riebeeck in an oval frame in the top left corner of the front. The front also shows a woman seated with an anchor in the bottom left corner, a wagon drawn by what looks like mules in the bottom center, a man with a rifle on horseback on a rock watching the wagon, and two cattle grazing. The back is also green in color and displays a sail ship in the middle of the ocean. The note is written in Afrikaans and English with the first line, on the front for the name of the bank and denomination, being in English. The front has one signature, the date and the serial number as well as the denomination. This particular note has the serial number C/3 537817, which is displayed twice on the front in black. The back only displays the name of the bank and the denomination. The note has a watermark displaying the portrait of Jan Van Riebeeck. Please carefully review the scan provided as it is part and parcel of our description.

Size: The banknote measures ~6 1/2" by ~3 1/2".

Condition: I would grade this banknote as a good very fine or much better. The note has several folds, both vertical and horizontal. It also has general wrinkling and may have been lightly pressed. The note is lightly soiled and has some minor stains along the central vertical fold. It does not have large objectionable stains, but have light staining or dirt throughout. the corners are intact and squared with some minor rounding and bums. The edges are intact and show minimum roughness. The note is still relatively stiff and shows some crispiness. The note has no graffiti, no pinholes, no tears, and no splits. The colors of the note are still clear but are somewhat subdued. A very nice note in good very fine condition to add to your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
