  • $ 377.77

Description: A beautiful about uncirculated or much better Banknote from South Africa. This is the South African Reserve Bank Five Pounds note issued 16 November 1948. The banknote is light green with brown and orange on the front. The front displays the portrait of Jan Van Riebeeck in an oval frame in the top left corner of the front. The front also shows a woman seated with an anchor in the bottom left corner, a wagon drawn by what looks like mules in the bottom center, a man with a rifle on horseback on a rock watching the wagon, and two cattle grazing. The back is also green in color and displays a sail ship in the middle of the ocean. The note is written in Afrikaans and English with the first line, on the front for the name of the bank and denomination, being in Afrikaans. The front has one signature, the date and the serial number as well as the denomination. This particular note has the serial number C over 4 243891, which is displayed twice on the front in black. The back only displays the name of the bank and the denomination. The note has a watermark displaying the portrait of Jan Van Riebeeck. Please carefully review the scan provided as it is part and parcel of our description.

Date: 16 November 1948.

Printer: Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co.

Size: The banknote measures ~6 1/2" by ~3 1/2".

Pick Number: P 95 and is listed in the banknote book as B723a.

Condition: I would grade this banknote as a good about uncirculated or much better. The note has no folds, is clean, and has no stains. The note has no graffiti, no pinholes, no tears, and no splits. The edges are intact with no identifiable roughness or nicks. The note retains all of its original stiffness and crispiness. The corners are intact, fully squared with some bumps and are minimally rounded. if any. The colors of the note are clear, vivid and bright. The note has a few minor and very light bumps here and there and that is why we grade it AU as opposed to Unc. We believe these issues are not a result of circulation, but rather of handling. A very nice note in great condition to add to your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
