Fedoskino Russian Lacquer Box Snegurochka or the Snowmaiden 1972 Artist Signed

Description: This is a gorgeous first quality paper-mache or papier-mâché Russian Lacquer Box from the Fedoskino School of lacquer miniatures. The box is rectangular in form having a flat bottom with four round feet. The hinged lid of the box is slightly curved at the corners. The lid is decorated with a hand painted colorful miniature of a young girl wearing a long blue coat with a hood. She is also wearing gloves or mittens. The young maiden is standing in a dark winter day in the middle of a forest where the ground and the trees are covered with white snow. There is a small yellow bird standing on a twig near the bottom left corner. The box shows the gold coloring, MOP and tempera and is just radiant and show great detail. We have tried to photograph the art work to show the beauty, but our photos just do not do the beauty and quality of the art work justice. This is a scene from the fairy tale Snegurochka or the Snow maiden. Snegurochka the daughter of Winter and Spring is hiding in the forest so that the Sun-God would not shine on her and thus resulting in her demise. This colorful box has the following inscriptions on the bottom; "Fedoskino; 1972" and the a signature of the artist, which we are unable to identify on the bottom edge of the scene in pale brown coloring over the white snow. The box shows wonderful detail and beautiful colors; A true beauty. The inside of the box is colored in the usual red color used in Russian lacquer boxes. The sides of the box have a nice gold colored chain decoration near the bottom. The rest of the exterior of the box has the usual black lacquered look of these beautiful Russian treasures. The box is also marked on the bottom of the base with the words "Made in USSR; TUo 117-7" where the number most likely represents the catalog number of the design itself. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
