German Medal Silver Colored Metal Dated June 1890 Commemorating The Celebration of Completion To Munster Ulm
Description: A beautiful and very interesting medal from Germany. The obverse of the medal depicts what looks like a Cathedral with a tall tower on the end having the initials W.M. under it. The medal is square in shape. The medal has the image of the church (it would appear that the Munster Ulm is not a cathedral since it was never the seat of a Bishop) and a hole above the tower in one of the corners where a fob would be attached. The hole is positioned in such a fashion as to have the medal always resting in a diamond position. The cathedral is surrounded with the legend "MUNSTER ZU ULM IN SEINER VOLLENDUNG" which appears to translate to the "completion of the Munster Ulm." The reverse of the medal has the legend "ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE MUNSTER-FEIER ZU ULM JUNI 1890 " which appears to translate to the following "commemorating the celebration to Munster Ulm June 1890." As best as we can figure it out the medal commemorates the erection of the ULM MUNSTER which happened 1890. The best we can tell is the church took a long time to complete but was completed in 1890. Be that as it may, this is a great looking medal made of a silver colored metal, possibly silver, but we are not certain. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: The medal is dated 1890.
Artist: Unknown, but the medal is signed W.M.
Weight and Size: The medal measures ~27 by ~27 millimeters and weighs ~9 grams.
Marks: Plain edge with no markings. There are the initials W.M. below the image of the cathedral on the obverse.
Reference: None identified.
Condition: I would grade the medal as a nice almost or about uncirculated. The medal is in great condition with minimum wear and retains some of its original luster. It is lightly toned or soiled in some areas which can be seen in the photos. The medal has a few scratches, a few bag marks, and some minor wear around the hole in the corner. Other than that it is a great looking medal worthy of a spot in your collection of German medals or cathedral related collection. Please view photos for additional condition information and to appreciate the beauty of the medal.
