Islamic Coin Umayyad of Spain 153AH Silver Dirham Abdul Rahman I Al-Andalus Mint
Description: A beautiful large flan very fine and uncommonly nicely struck Umayyad of Spain silver dirham from 153AH (770 AD). this coin can be attributed to Abdul Rahman I, the Umayyad Amir who ruled Islamic or Arab Southern Spain in the period 138-172 AH (756-788 AD). The coin clearly shows the date as 153AH and the mint as al-Andalus or Andalusia. This coin is nicely struck with slight double striking on the obverse which is very unusual since these coins are normally crudely struck on crudely cut flans. This coin has a nice round flan with beautiful well centered strike. A nice looking silver coin that is over 1200 years old with beautiful and very readable calligraphy. The coin has great eye appeal and beautiful appearance and looks much better than the photos suggest Please carefully review the scans presented as it is part and parcel of our description.
Date: Struck 153 AH or 770 AD.
Mint: The coin clearly shows mint location being al-Andalus presumably current day Cordoba in Southern Spain.
Size and weight: This is a silver dirham, weighs ~2.6 grams and is ~27.2 mm in diameter.
References: It is Album 339 and it is Wilkes 240.
Condition: I would grade this coin as very fine with a well centered strike and having beautiful and very readable Calligraphy. The coin is nicely struck with slight double striking on the obverse which is very unusual since these coins are normally crudely struck on crudely cut flans. It has a nice large and round flan. It shows some wear especially at the high points. It also has some scratches and bag marks within the fields. The edge of the flan has some bumps, a small break and bent areas with some flatness suggesting it may have been mounted sometime in its life. However, these are minor and the coin looks much better than the photos shows. A nice looking piece worthy of a pot in your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
