Lot of 5 Vintage Bird Shaped Pennsylvania Flat Back Tin Cookie Cutters

  • $ 49.99

Description: A lot of 5 vintage flat back tin cookie cutters. The five cutters, which are a great example of Pennsylvania country primitives, are in the shape of what we believe are five different birds all standing. Two of the cutters were moist likely made by the same tinsmith. These are the two in the middle of the first photo as evidenced by the shape of their tails. We believe the first cutter on the left of the top row in the first photo is most likely from the late 1800s or early 1900s while the other four are more modern possibly mid to late 1900s. All five cutters have holes in the back to let the air out. The only one with a large hole is the oldest cutter. The other four have either one or two small holes. All five cutters have a curved handle soldered to the flat back top. The cutters are very well made and are solid with mostly blotchy patina except for the old cutter which has an even dark age patina. They all have some minor rust spots and some distortion. A nice lot of Pennsylvania German primitive tin implements worthy of a spot in your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but most likely the chick cutter (top left corner in the first photo is from the late 1800s or early 1900s while the other four are from the mid to late 1900s.

Origin: They were all acquired at estate sales in Southeastern Pennsylvania Size: Starting from the top left corners and proceeding to the right then down to the left and so on the cutters measure ~4" by ~3", ~4" by ~3", ~3 1/2" by ~3 1/4", ~4" by ~3 1/8", and ~3 3/4" by ~3 3/4". With the designs measuring ~3/8" to ~1/2" in depth. All five cutters together weigh slightly over 5 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Nice lot of cookie cutters with nice and very desirable Pennsylvania Dutch primitive designs. These old cutters would definitely make a great addition to your cutter, Americana, or primitives collection.

Condition: All cutters are intact with no break and no repairs. They are all original, are soiled, display signs of rust, with four having a blotchy dark gray patina and one (the oldest of them) having an even dark patina. All cutters display some distortion here and there with several having distorted handles. The oldest cutter (top left corner of first photo) shows prominent signs of distortion of the backing along the edge of the design. Beautiful vintage cutters worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
