Mid 1900's James Seagreaves Whimsical Glazed Brown & Black Folk Art Redware Bird

Description: A nice glazed and nicely decorated redware bird figurine made by James C Seagreaves. This is a whimsical brown colored bird with black sponged highlights, typical of Seagreaves' work. The bird is hollow and stands on a round shaped base. The bird is perched on a column rising from the base with his legs resting on two side short branches. The figurine has raised design outlining the feathers in the wings, the legs themselves, the feet surrounding the branches, the eyes, and the beak. The bird's legs and feet or claws are colored with black sponging. The oval base of the piece is marked on the underside "JCS." The head of the bird is looking forward with a slight tilt downward. The piece is hollow but has raised details throughout. A beautiful piece of modern folk art redware to add to your collection. Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime in the period 1950-1980. 

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in southeastern Pennsylvania. 

Size: The base measures ~3 1/2" in diameter, while the bird itself is ~9" long, is ~3" at its widest, and ~7 1/2" at its highest. The piece weighs about One pound and 3 ounces. 

Maker: James Christian Seagreaves. 

Marks: Marked "JCS" on bottom in cursive calligraphy. 

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful piece of contemporary redware made by a master potter. A beautiful piece, which deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection. 

Condition: The bird is in good condition with no cracks, repairs, chips, or hairlines. The piece has crazing to the glaze throughout. Other than that, the piece is solid, beautiful, and very well made. A great looking bird in excellent condition to add to your collection.
