Antique Framed Gilded Brass Repousse Plaque or Medallion Of General Foy By Morel

Description: This is a very interesting gilded brass repousse or high relief plaque or medallion of General Foy a French statesmen commemorating his reelection too Parliament in February 24, 1824. The piece shows the bust of the general with head turned towards the front. The image is in high relief or more likely repousse. It has the legend "LE GENERAL FOY REELU DEPUTE LE 27 FEVRIEE 1824" in raised lettering along the edge of the medallion. There is the name "MOREL F." along the truncation of the general’s arm. The plaque is framed in a gold-colored round wood frame and the plaque is covered with glass. It is covered with paper on the back and is equipped with a hanging loop. The medallion shows great details of the general with exquisite craftsmanship. Morel, is well known for his gold artifacts. This piece is just a great example of his work and accomplishment. Date: Unknown but most likely sometime after 1824 most likely 1830s or so.

Origin: Recently acquired at an estate sale in Southeast Pennsylvania. The piece was made in France.

Size: The medallion measure ~2 1/2' in diameter and the piece itself measures ~3 1/2" in diameter, while the item weighs about an ounce and a half.

Marks: Signed "MOREL F." along the truncation of the general’s arm.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice framed medallion or plaque of a French historic figure in very good condition and ready to hang. It would make a worthy addition to your collection.

Condition: The medallion itself is in good condition with some scratches in the field. There is also rubbing along the high points of the image such as the edge of the lapel, fore head, nose, and tip of the chin. However, these do not distract from the beauty and quality of the piece. The frame has lost some of the gilding and shows the color of the red brown wood under it giving the frame a nice shabby chic appearance and lots of character. The brown paper backing is intact but has some waviness to is and does not sit flat. Be that as it may, this is a great and unusual piece that would look great in your collection or as a decorative piece n your wall. Please see photos for additional condition information.
