Antique Hand Painted Miniature of a Woman within Glass Covered Round Bezel
Description: An antique well-done hand painted miniature of a period woman in a glass covered round brass bezel having a hanging loop on top. There is a wide velour type ribbon knotted to the hanging loop. We are offering this piece as found and so we are leaving the ribbon with it. The piece has no metal backing but rather a paper backing and you can see the prongs holding the piece together. The miniature shows a woman with dark hair, brown eyes, and red lips. The woman is wearing a dark dress having lace along the neck line of the dress. She is also wearing a necklace made of red round beads and ear rings. The image is drawn on a blue background with white area surrounding it. The drawing is very well done and shows nice details of the woman's face such as the chin, the lips, nose, and the hair. The image is covered with glass for protection but has no backing except for wrinkled paper. You can also see the prongs at the edge of the bezel which are holding the painting in place. A very well-done painting by what we believe is an accomplished artist. A great piece ready to add to your antique miniature collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime mid to late 1800s (mid to late 19th century). Origin: Recently acquired at an estate sale in Southeast Pennsylvania.
Size: The piece measure ~2 1/16" in diameter with the loop on tope being 3/8" in diameter. The piece with the ribbon weighs less than one ounce.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice hand painted miniature nicely done in good condition. It would make a worthy addition to your collection.
Condition: The piece is in good condition given its age. It has no breaks and no repairs. The glass cover has no cracks but has a small deep scratch at about 3:00 o'clock. The piece comes with a wide velour type ribbon knotted to the hanging loop. We are offering this piece as found and so we are leaving the ribbon with it. The piece has no metal backing but rather a wrinkled blue colored paper backing and you can see the prongs holding the piece together. The Image is well executed having no losses to its colors or details and looks fine. The backing may have lost something and shows the teeth holding the bezel and the backing together but that does not affect the image or the piece's integrity. The edge of the brass bezel has a few minor scratches and is a bit soiled and would probably benefit from a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty. Be that as it may, this is a nice old piece which would look good in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
