Old Shenandoah Valley Glazed Redware Dog Head Still Coin Bank Brown Black Colors

  • $ 1,227.00

Description: An antique glazed redware still coin bank. The bank, which was made in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia most likely in the late 19th century, is shaped as a dog's head. It is a multi-colored redware colored in black and brown. The dog shows quite a bit of details such the eyes, the ears, the muzzle with the mouth and nostrils. Great looking piece with a large coin slot on top of the head. The piece has a flat bottom on which it rests. The piece is substantial weighing over 14 ounces and has a nice size (~4"x~4"x~3.5"). It is in very good condition with general crazing of the glaze and a few minor losses to the glaze. It does have some minor roughness along the edge of the coin slot and scuff marks to the surface. A very nice antique in very good condition, which would display very nicely in your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Size: Measures ~4" by ~4"" by ~3 1/2" and weighs ~14 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a great antique with very interesting shape, subject and coloring. Definitely deserves a prominent spot in your antique redware collection.

Condition: Bank is in very good condition. It has general soiling and general crazing to the glaze. The bank also has no chips, no cracks, no hairlines, and no repairs. It has a few minor losses to the glaze especially along the bottom edge, some minor roughness along the edge of the coin slot and scuff marks to the surface, some scratches to the surface. These are all minor and hardly noticeable and the piece just looks great and is wonderful. The piece has some of the usual issues associated with old piece of primitive redware such as pops, slubs, uneven surfaces, areas where the coloring or the glaze did not fully flow, and areas of general roughness. One such spot is a ~3/4" by ~1/4" depression spot on the back of the head, that is glazed over thus is original to the making. Be that as it may, this is a great piece in good condition despite being an old toy. Please see photos for additional condition information.
