Old Sycamore Wood Cylindrical Mauchline Box High St Mineral Well Moffat Scotland
Description: Offered here is a cylindrical Mauchline box. The box is made of Sycamore wood and has a lift-off lid. The top of the box has a transfer of a photo showing High Street looking north in Moffat Scotland. The side of the box also has a transfer of a photo showing the Mineral Well in Moffat. The image of the High Street, on top of the box, is similar to an image of the same street taken in the late 1800s (which we found on the internet) suggesting the box is from the mid to late 1800s. The box is lacquered throughout its exterior except for the base. The base was most likely covered with Moroccan paper, which has been lost with time and is no longer there, but you can see remnants of the glue that was holding it in place. The surface finish of the box shows general crazing and minimum losses. The box, which is cylindrical in shape, has a flat round base with straight rising sides and a slightly domed top of the lid. The interior of the box is clean, undecorated and is not lacquered, thus showing the natural wood. A great example of this type of boxes with a nice scene of a beautiful quaint little town in Scotland in very good condition after being around for over 150 years. Would make a nice addition to any collection. Pleases carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Additional Information: Information gleaned from the internet indicate that "Moffat is famous for its waterfall ' The Grey Mares Tail' which is the fifth highest waterfall in the UK. Surrounded by uniquely dramatic scenery, Grey Mare's Tail is a superb example of a hanging valley."
Date: Uncertain but was made sometime in mid to late 1800s (mid to late 19th century).
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was made in or near Mauchline Scotland in the United Kingdom.
Size: The box measures ~3 1/2" high, is ~1 1/2" in diameter and weighs about 1.2 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Unmarked as to the maker.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: An interesting antique box in good original condition, which would make a great addition to your small box collection.
Condition: The box is in good overall condition with minor dings and scratches. The box has lost all the Moroccan paper which would have covered the base with only remnants of the glue holding it evident. The box is intact with minimal losses to the image and surface finish. The two transfers are all there with some losses especially for the image on the side of the box along the edge of the top half of the box. The box is all original with no breaks or repairs. It is a bit soiled and hence the images are not very clear especially the side image of the Mineral Well. The interior of the box is lightly soiled but is still in excellent condition and would clean easily. Just a nice antique wooden Mauchline box worthy of a spot in any collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
