Old Turned Wood Saffron Cup-Shaped Sander or Pepper Pot Lancaster County, PA
Description: A beautiful turned cherry wood pepper pot or sander shaped as a saffron cup with a tight-fitting central seated lid with drilled holes. This piece has a beautiful light stain background with darker brown blotched staining and a nice brown colored band at the top of the cup. The piece has a round base that is also dark brown in color, but more matte in appearance. The piece is marked in pencil on the inside with the date 1852 (see last two photos) and on the bottom of the base with very difficult to read markings of which we were able to identify possibly the following written in circular form "Present to ? Rohrer, John.. B..." Merry Christmas and ...." (see 8th photo). The piece has a nice shellac finish. This piece is made in the best Americana tradition common in Northeastern Part of the US especially in Pennsylvania Dutch country in Lancaster County. This particular piece was attributed by its previous owner to Jonas Bucher of Clay township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Be that as it may, it is a beautiful piece worthy of a spot in any collection of turned wood implements. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: The piece is dated 1852.
Origin: Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA.
Size: measures ~1 13/16" in diameter at the base, ~1 3/4" diameter at the top where the lid sits, and ~4 1/2" high with the lid closed to the top of the finial. The piece weighs about 1.2 ounces.
Maker: Possibly Jonas or John Bucher (attributed as such by the previous owner).
Marks: Has the date 1852 written in pencil on the inside (See last two photos) and has writing, which we cannot fully read, in pencil on the bottom of the base.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is definitely a beautiful handmade saffron cup shaped pepper pot or sander with nice coloring.
Condition: The cup is in very good condition with a tight-fitting lid. The finish is in very good condition with no losses. The surface has a few minor scratches and a few blemishes, which are difficult to see and do not distract from the piece's beauty. It is clean with some minor dings to the surface but no observable losses. The piece does not have breaks, repairs, or damage that we could see.
