Old Wood Brown Painted Candlebox Candle Box Silver Colored Stenciled Decoration
Description: A beautiful antique rectangular painted wood or wooden candle box or candlebox having a flat base with straight sides rising to a notched end where a sliding wooden lid fits. Both the box four sides and the lid are decorated with a stenciled design that is colored in a silver off white coloring on a brown colored background. The lid has a design depicting a flower pot with a stylized floral design and a notch to pull it out. The sides show what looks like a geometric design with circles, ovals, diamonds and arrow head shapes. The bottom of the box is also painted. The box construction is a nail and dove tailed construction with the nails painted over and mostly holding the base to the sides. We are unable to see nails holding the sides together so we are assuming that the dovetailing is glued and provides the structural integrity. The inside also has a brown finish. This is a very beautiful and interesting box worthy of a spot in your collection. Please view photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Early to mid 1900's, possibly closer to midcentury judging by the decoration.
Origin: Was purchased in an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Size: Box measures ~7 5/8" by ~4 3/4" and is ~3 1/2" high. The box weighs about 10 ounces.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful antique which would make a great addition to any antique box or Americana collection.
Condition: The box is in very good condition given its age. It has some wear and minimum paint losses commensurate with its age and utilitarian function. It is relatively clean with no breaks or repairs. The inside has some soiling but nothing of true concern. There is some color loss along the edges as well as some minor chips to the wooden surface here and there all of which can be seen in the photos. Additionally, the box has some surface dings and scratches throughout. We have taken many photos of the piece in an attempt to show the beauty and condition of this great and rather interesting candle box. Please carefully review the photos for additional condition information.
