Painted Hand Carved Wood Bird in Heart Hanging Folk Art Walter & June Gottshall

Description: A beautiful hand carved wood and polychrome painted American Folk Art decorative item. The carving is of a bird perched within a wooden heart. The heart has a nylon thread in its top center where it can be hung to display. Both the bird and heart are carved from wood with the bird having red coloring with white, yellow, brown and green decorative accents. The heart is painted in brown. The bird has an off-white colored chest with a yellow beak and black outlined eyes. It is attached to the heart with two braided wires used for legs and anchored into both the bird and heart. The bird has the letters WJ, written on the underside of its tail, for Walter and June Gottshall. Just a wonderful and nicely done piece of American Folk Art to add to your Americana Collection or to decorate your home. Date: Unknown, but the piece is contemporary.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Size: The heart is ~8 3/4" wide and ~5 1/2" high, while the bird is ~5 5/8" long and ~1 3/4" at its widest. The piece weighs about 4 ounces.

Maker: June and Walter Gottshall.

Marks: Marked WJ in light ink on the underside of the bird's tail.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice and colorful piece of Americana, which would make a worthy addition to your collection of American Folk Art.

Condition: The carving is in very good condition, with no breaks, cracks, losses, or repairs. It does have minor scratches, a minimal loss to the paint and a few minor nicks. Please see photos for additional condition information.
