Pair of Antique English Brass Chamber Candlestick Holders J. Moffat's Birmingham

Description: Offered here is a pair of chamber brass candlestick holders. The candlestick holders have shaped elongated tray with a column in the center. The tray has a finger loop that is attached to it with two brass rivets. The central column is made of two pieces with one attached to the tray and the other separate and can be moved up and down within a shallow channel to accommodate a candle. The moving piece of the column has a downwards slanted extension to catch the molten wax. The finger loop is marked with a raised design (repoussé) which says "J. MOFFAT'S PATENT BIRMINGHAM". The central column on both pieces can be extended to a maximum height of ~4" with an inside depth of ~1 5/8". The inside diameter of the columns is ~7/8". Both pieces appear to be alll original with one having a bit looser moving column than the other. Be that as it may, they are both great looking and would make a great addition to your antique candlesticks collection or can be used as decorative pieces around your home. Date: Unknown but most likely sometime in the 1800s (19th century).

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The candlesticks were made in Birmingham England. 

Size: Both pieces measure ~4 1/2" high when columns are fully extended. The tray measures ~6 1/2" by ~4 1/2" and are ~3/4" high. The central column on both pieces can be extended to a maximum height of ~4" with an inside depth of ~1 5/8". The inside diameter of the columns is ~7/8".. Both pieces together weigh slightly over 10 ounces. 

Maker: Made by J. Moffat's of Birmingham England. Marks: The finger loop is marked with a raised design (repoussé) which says "J. MOFFAT'S PATENT BIRMINGHAM".. 

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice antique and rather unusual pair of candlestick holders having a beautiful shapely design with a great look. A pair to use around your home or worthy of a spot in any collection. 

Condition: The candlestick holders are in very good used condition. They have no breaks, repairs, or defects. Both pieces appear to be all original with one having a bit looser moving column than the other. They both have scratches, some minor dings, slightly bent edges, and some soiling. The candle holding portion of the column as well as the bases have some minor waxy residue from being used. Bothe pieces have residue of brass cleaner especially in the finger loops well as some small dings in the trays. Be that as it may, the pieces are in very good condition and great looking for being over 150 years old. Please see photos for additional condition information.
