The medal is a restrike (probably 19th century or earlier) of a medal struck in the period 1555-1559 during the papacy of Paul IV, possibly designed by Gianfederico Bonzaqngi. The medal which is not dated, shows Pope Paul IV facing left on the obverse with the legend "• PAVLVS • IIII • | PONT • OPT • M •" surrounding the bust along the edge. The reverse shows an image of Christ driving the money mongers/changers out of the temple with the legend "DOMVS • MEA • DOM | VS • ORATIONIS | • VOC •" in exergue. The scene on the reverse as well on the obverse are sharply struck and the medal looks great with very nice eye appeal. The medal is listed in Lincoln 569, in Mazio as 78, and in Modesti as 484. The medal weigh ~12.8 grams and measures ~30 mm in diameter and may have been designed by Gianfederico Bonzaqngi as engraver. This is a beautiful nicely toned, with rich dark brown coloring, medal having a nice portrait of the Pontiff. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Medal is not dated but we believe it is a restrike (possibly mid to late 19th century) The original was struck in 1555-1559 during the papacy of Paul IV. Mint: Papal State in Rome.

Size and weight: The Medal weighs ~12.8 gm and measures ~30 mm in diameter.

References: The medal is listed in Lincoln 569, in Mazio as 78, and in Modesti as 484.

Condition: I would grade the medal as extremely fine or better with a nice dark brown toning and great eye appeal. The medal has some even light wear throughout. It is darkly toned on both obverse and reverse in a rich brown coloring. The field on both sides of the medal are clean, clear with minimum surface marks. The details of the scene on the reverse including the details of Christ and the sick are well preserved and relatively sharp. A nice and relatively uncommon medal in very good condition. It would make a nice addition to your collection.
