Pewter Porringer Basin Bowl Pennsylvania Tab Handle Jay T Stauffer of Lititz PA
Description: Vintage pewter porringer made by Jay Thomas Stauffer. The piece has a what is known as Pennsylvania Tabb Handle. The porringer has what is known as a basin bowl, namely a bowl having a round footed base with rounded sides rising in a slightly flared fashion to a shaped rim. This is a handmade true American modern piece made by a great modern American pewterer. The piece was handmade by Jay Thomas Stauffer, a mid to late 20th century pewterer, who lived in Lititz Pennsylvania. The porringer is marked with Jay's mark (stamped on the back of the handle) consisting of a spread winged standing eagle surrounded by stars with the initials JTS within an oval below the eagle all within a circle. The porringer is clean with a nice darker gray patina with some light pitting in the bottom of the bowl. This beautiful piece would fit nicely in any collection of American Pewter. Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The porringer is ~5 1/4" in diameter at the top, is ~2 1/16" high, and is ~7" at its widest including the handle. The porringer weighs about 12.5 ounces.
Maker: Jay Thomas Stauffer.
Marks: Stamped on the back of the handle with the maker's mark consisting of a spread winged standing eagle surrounded by stars with the initials JTS within an oval below the eagle all within a circle.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a beautiful porringer in nice condition. A nice vintage piece with a beautiful classic design made by an American pewterer. It would look great in your collection.
Condition: This porringer is in very good condition. It has no breaks, cracks, or repairs. It has minor scratches and dings throughout. The bottom interior of the bowl shows some slight pitting under the dark gray patina. Be that as it may, the piece is solid and beautiful. A great looking piece having a nice classic Pennsylvania form, which would display nicely in your collection.
