Rare 1938 Isaac Stahl Glazed Redware Miniature Handled Jug Brown & Green Colors

  • $ 107.77

Description: A beautiful glazed redware miniature jug with a large applied handle. The jug has a flat round base with rising sides ending in a shoulder mid way of the height. The piece has a short neck with a rolled small opening or mouth on the top. The jug has an applied handle attached near the base and at the top. The piece is glazed inside and out but not on the bottom. The jug is colored with a brown background having dark brown spots and green scalloped design all around at the shoulder and at the top opening. These are typical Stahl Pottery coloring in the browns and greens with light mottling. An interesting miniature, which was probably made at the end of the day with left over material. The base which is unglazed and shows typical coloring of unglazed redware is marked as to the maker and the date it was made. It is signed and dated by Isaac Stahl. The piece is all original and is in very good condition. It has no breaks, no chips (with the exception of a small glaze flake on top of the rolled lip of the top opening), and no repairs. The piece has general crazing to the glaze, which is difficult to see because of the color, but is there. It also has some of the usual manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, and unglazed spots. These issues are minor, with the unglazed areas being mostly evident at the base. Otherwise, this piece has very few of them. Be that as it may, this is just a great looking piece made in the Stahl Pottery in Powder Valley Pennsylvania. The bottom shows details about the potter, the pottery, and for whom it was made as well as the date the piece was made. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: September 9, 1938.

Origin: Powder Valley, Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The jug is ~1 3/8" in diameter at the base, ~1" in diameter at the top, ~3 1/4" at its widest including the handle, and is ~2 7/8" high. The piece weighs about 4 ounces.

Maker: Isaac Stahl.

Marks: Marked "M-By-I.S.S.-9-9" along the edge of the base in the outer circle and the year "1938" below in the second circle. See photos for additional details.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice piece in form and color that is in excellent condition after being around for over 80 years made by one of the best and most famous potters from Southeastern Pennsylvania. Very well done and would display very well in your collection of Pennsylvania redware.

Condition: The Jug is in excellent condition with no cracks, hairlines, breaks, repairs, or chips. It does have a small flake to the glaze on the top of the top opening. The piece is all original with general crazing to the glaze and some of the usual manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, and unglazed spots. There are several unglazed spots along the edge of the base, which can be seen in the photos. In addition, the piece shows a defect where the handle and rolled top meet which shows up as a lump with what looks like a crack under the rolled top (see first two photos). However, this is an artifact of the making, is glazed over, and is original to the making. This is the main reason we believe this is an end of the day piece of pottery made by Isaac Stahl using left over material. Be that as it may, the piece very nice and rather rare. It is worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
