Undated Nice Footed Palekh Russian Lacquer Box Scene from Tsar Saltan Fairy Tale Signed (Evgeni) Serov
Description: This is a beautiful rectangular paper-mache or papier-mâché Russian Lacquer Box with which is rounded on the top and bottom and has 4 small feet on the base to support it. The box is marked Palekh and was made at the Palekh school of miniature painting. The box has a flat bottom with small feet at the corners and a hinged lid. The lid is decorated with a hand painted colorful image of a young man observing a winged princes standing and soldiers, lead by Chernomor, looking at her. There is also a squirrel in a cage gnawing on a golden nut. The price has bags of golden nuts in front of him and he is kneeling. The scene represents aspects of Tsar Saltan, especially with prince Gvidon observing the transformation of the white swan into a beautiful princess who he eventually marries. The box is signed "Serov. E" for the well known artist Evgeni Serov from Palekh. The box shows wonderful detail and beautiful colors; A true beauty and a very seldom seen box in subject and shape. The inside of the box is colored in the usual red color used in Russian lacquer boxes. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: The box is undated but we believe it is from the late 1900s.
Origin: Palekh, Russia.
Size: The box measures ~5 1/4" by ~4 1/8" and is ~1 7/8" high when closed. The box weighs almost nine ounces.
Artist: Evgeni Serov.
Marks: The box has markings in gold colored Cyrillic calligraphy on the bottom of the painting at the edge of the lid, which reads "Tsarina-Lebedv; Palekh; Serov E."

Condition: The box is in excellent like new condition. The box has no cracks, breaks, repairs, hairlines, or crazing. The art work on top of the lid is intact, beautiful, well executed, and in very good shape with no losses or fading.
