... 1997 Breininger Glazed Redware Miniature Chicken or Rooster Figurine – Giamer Antiques and Collectibles

Unusual 1997 Glazed Redware Miniature Chicken or Rooster Figurine by Lester Breininger

This product is currently sold out.

Description: A nice small size or miniature redware figurine in the shape of a chicken or rooster standing. The bird is glazed and is yellow in color with brown and black highlights to mimic feathers. The chicken has a brown comb, a black beak, and black eyes. The piece has green highlights indicative of the use of copper oxide under the gaze. The bird stands on an off-round base which is decorated with round pressed flowers with black centers all along the periphery. Because the bird is heavy for its size we are assuming that it is mostly solid and has a small hole in the base to allow the moisture to escape during the firing. This is a very beautiful and unusual piece. It would make for a very interesting decorative piece. Of course such pieces were meant to be toys for the children in the old days. This cast figural bird has nice details and is very well defined. A very nicely done and unusual piece. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1997.

Origin: Robesonia, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Size: This piece is ~3 7/8" high and the base is ~1 1/2" diameter. The longest dimension is 4" from the beak to the end of the tail and the piece is about ~1 3/4" at its widest. The bird weighs ~7 ounces.

Maker: Lester Breininger Marks: "Breininger Pottery Pa; 1997" written in cursive calligraphy on the base.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a beautiful decorative piece and rather unusual miniature redware figurine. A definite beauty deserving of a prominent spot in any redware collection mad in the studios of a master potter with the Pennsylvania Dutch heritage who died in December 2011.

Condition: The piece is in very good condition. It has no chips, cracks, repairs, or hairlines. The piece has general crazing to the glaze throughout. The piece also has a small flake on the edge of the tail (see the tip of the second feather in the tail in the 1st, 2nd, and 5th photos). Other than that the piece is great and would display well. Please see photos for additional condition information.
