Unusual Antique Brass Taper Jacks Candle Holder with Wax Taper Made in Italy
Description: This is an old taper jacks brass candle holder with a brass conical snuffer. The conical snuffer is attached to the holder with a chain. The wax taper or ribbon is wrapped around a horizontal bar with the tip exiting through an opening in the center of a round plate on top supported by a brass bracket emanating from the center of a round base, The conical snuffer has a brass leg which fits in a small rectangular opening attached to the side of the bracket. The horizontal bar is held in place and can be removed by unscrewing it from the bracket by turning the round loop opposite where the snuffer rests. The piece has a handle to carry it around which has a similar design as the bracket and is attached to the base at the bottom and the center. The piece is stamped "MADE ITALY" at the side of the base (see last photo for details). The fact that the piece is marked with made in Italy suggests that it was made in the late 1800s or very early 1900s. The bottom of the base is covered with green felt. A rare and rather unusual piece of brass to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of the description.
Date: Unknown but most likely late 1800s (Late 19th Century) or early 1900s (early 20thh century).
Size: Measures ~3" in diameter at the base, ~6 1/2" high, and it is ~ 5 1/4" at its widest with the snuffer in place. The piece weighs about one pound and one ounce.
Marks: Marked on the edge of the base "MADE ITALY".
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very rare and uncommon piece of brass lighting implement in very good condition. Definitely a nice piece deserving a prominent spot in your candle holder collection.
Condition: In very good condition with no cracks, no breaks, no losses and no repairs. It is generally soiled and the wax tape is dry and soiled as would be expected. The piece could use a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Softening and cleaning the wax would require carefully washing and soaking it in warm water, which we again leave to the discretion of the new owner. A very nice and uncommon old piece to add to your collection. Please see photos to appreciate the quality, beauty and condition of this beautiful piece.
