Unusual Antique Glazed Redware 7" Tall Handled Tankard w/ Thin Walls Nice Color

  • $ 177.77

Description: This is a beautiful antique rather tall (7 1/8" tall) glazed redware primitive tankard with an applied handle. The tankard has what we would characterize as very thin walls (when compared to other redware hollowware). It is rather delicate in construction and very tall. The tankard has a flat off-round (~3" by ~2 5/8") base with straight rising sides having an incised band near the bottom and ending in a plain rim. The tankard has an ear shaped applied handle. It is glazed on the outside but does not appear to be glazed on the inside. This suggests to us that the tankard was not made for drinking a liquid but rather as a decorative pierce or for some other unknown reason. The piece, which we believe is from the late 1800s or earlier is in over all very good condition with no breaks or repairs that we can see. It does have a muffled thud noise when tapped suggesting a hairline or crack but careful examination did not reveal any visible lines. The surface glaze has general crazing and scratches but still looks great and different. The piece does not have any obvious cracks, breaks, repairs, or losses. The piece has a several very shallow and almost unperceivable flakes along the top rim. A beautiful antique and very unusual piece of redware with great looking coloring making it a great addition to your antique redware collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Condition: The tankard is in very good condition with no breaks, no repairs, and no visible hairlines. It does have a muffled thud noise when tapped suggesting a hairline or crack but careful examination did not reveal any visible lines or cracks. The surface glaze has general crazing and scratches but still looks great and different. The piece does not have any obvious cracks, breaks, repairs, or losses. The piece has a several very shallow and almost unperceivable flakes along the top rim. Additionally, the piece has some loss of glaze on the surface, which really gives it character as opposed to being objectionable. The piece is glazed on the outside but does not appear to be glazed on the inside. This suggests to us that the tankard was not made for drinking a liquid but rather as a decorative pierce or for some other unknown reason. As is the case with such old primitive pieces of pottery, the piece has a few of the usual defects you would expect such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas, and uneven spots. Be that as it may, these issues do not to distract from the beauty and quality of the piece. It is a very nice-looking piece of redware that would look great in your collection of antique redware.
