Unusual Old Cast Iron Painted Figural Bottle Opener Rooster Standing Head Turned

Description: A rare antique painted cast iron bottle opener in the form of a bird, with a long neck, standing with its head up. The bird, a rooster, has its head slightly turned sideways to its right. The piece is painted in brown, black, yellow, and green colors and shows cast details of the head, wings, and tail. The head shows the outline of the eyes and the beak. The piece has been lacquered and as such it has a shiny appearance. The piece shows some paint losses. The rooster is standing on a green colored base with its tail up and behind it. The tail has an opening in its middle which serves as the bottle opener. The bottom of the base is flat and shows some minor signs of rust as well as some paint losses. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Unknown but most likely late 1800s to early 1900s.

Origin: Purchased in an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The piece measures ~3 1/4" high, the base is ~1 1/4" by ~1", and the bird itself is ~2 3/4" long from end to end. The piece weighs about 7 ounces.

Marks: Unmarked.

 

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice and uncommon old piece, which would make a worthy addition to your collection.

Condition: The bottle opener is in good overall condition, with no breaks or repairs. The piece has been lacquered and as such it has a shiny appearance. The paint job does make it a bit hard to discern some of the features of the piece. The piece shows some paint losses. The bottom of the base is flat and shows signs of rust as well as some paint losses. All of these issues can be seen in the photos.
