Unusual Twentieth Century Mandolin Shaped Sterling Silver Snuff Box London England Fully Hallmarked
Description: A beautiful and very unusual small sterling silver snuff box in the form of a mandolin. The box has a repousse design through depicting a scroll on top of the mandolin and a scene showing a man with a cane in his hand and wearing a hat standing in the center of extensive scroll design. . The sides are also decorated with repousse scrolls. The bottom of the mandolin is a hinged lid, which opens to reveal the interior. The body of the box has an extension with curved end. There are sterling wires (the mandolin strings) starting from the end of the box going over a bridge and are tied to the curved end of the extension. The piece is fully hall marked and shows the leopard head for London, a Lion Passant for Sterling a cursive capital "E" which is for the year, however, we are unable to find a reference that gives us the date for this letter and hence our assumption that it is probably late 1900s. There is als a maker's mark which seems to be the letters "GAD" within an oval. All these marks are within the central depression which represents to the opening to the sound box. We were not able to photograph it because the wires are obstructing the view. This is a great and unusual piece of sterling silver weighing 41.3 grams or 1.33 Troy Ounces. Date: Uncertain when this box was made but it is most likely for late 1900s.
Origin: London England.
Size: Measures ~3 1/8" long, while the box itself is 1 1/2" by 1 1/4" and is 5/8" deep. The piece weighs 41.33 grams of sterling silver.
Maker: Unknown byt has the initials GAD.
Marks: Marked the leopard head for London, a Lion Passant for Sterling, a cursive capital "E" for the year and a maker's mark which seems to be the letters "GAD" within an oval.
Condition: The box is in excellent condition. It has no breaks, repairs, dings, or losses. The hinge is intact and works well and the box closes well and tight. The designs on the are still well detailed and do not show discernible wear. The box has a few scratches to the outside surface, but nothing of concern. The piece could probably use a good cleaning, which we leave to the new owner. Be that as it may this is a nice box to add to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
