Vintage Carved Long Rectangular Wood Box with Hinged Lid, Nail & Dovetail Construction
Description: This is a very nice vintage wood box. The box which is long and rectangular in shape has sides fitted together in dovetail woodworking. The base of the box is attached to the sides with nails. The hinged lid is engraved with a textured pattern leaving a central cross like shape and two curvy linear shapes one on each side of the cross as smooth decoration. The box is made of what we believe is a hardwood, is stained in dark brown coloring and has some sort of surface finish. The interior as well as the base are unstained and unfinished. We are uncertain what the box was used for, possibly to store gloves or just a trinket box. It is clean and a bit clunky as opposed to being fine cabinetry, but still a very mice wooden box. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain, but most likely mid to late-1900's.
Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southern New Jersey.
Size: The box measures ~14 1/2" by ~5 1/4" and is ~3 1/2" high with lid closed. The piece weighs a bit over 2 pounds.
Marks: Unmarked as to the maker.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice, vintage wood box with nice, unusual, and most interesting decorations. It would make a great addition to your wood box collection.
Condition: The box is in very good condition with no major problems. It has no breaks and no repairs. The hinge is intact and works as it should. The box has scratches, minor dings to the surface, and scuff marks along the edges. It also has pencil markings on the inside. The box is lightly soiled, especially on the textured surface of the lid, which is truly not a problem. The only issue we see is the fact that one of the nails holding the bottom to the back side, has gone through the side for a short distance and resulted in a crack on the inside, which only shows partially on the outside (see fourth and seventh photos). Be that as it may, the box is clean, solid and in great condition and would make a great addition to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
