Vintage Cast Brass Doorknocker Formed as A United States Marine Corp Insignia

  • $ 49.99

Description: A vintage cast brass doorknocker. The knocker is shaped in the form of the United States Marine Corp insignia consisting of a globe with an anchor behind it and a spread winged eagle above it. The eagle has a banner by hos beak flying above its head. The insignia is attached to a vertical bar, having a horizontal portion, with a screw and swivels on the bar. The vertical bar would be attached to the door from two holes in it and the insignia would be swiveled out and released to cause the knocking. The bottom of the insignia has a raised solid cylinder which would hit the horizontal bottom bar and make the knocking noise. The piece is toned and could use a good cleaning to bring out its original beauty, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. A very interesting vintage doorknocker worthy of a spot in your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Unknown but most likely mid to late 1900s.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The piece measures ~8" at its longest and ~6" at its widest. The piece weighs about one pound and 11 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Just a very nice cast brass doorknocker with an interesting design to add to your collection.

Condition: The brass insignia itself is In very good condition with no breaks or repairs. The piece has several surface scratches and a few dings. The knocker is soiled and could use a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty. However, we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. The one issue we see is the fact that the hinge has some wiggle and the bat on which the insignia is supposed to swivel and generate the knocking, is a bit light and not commensurate with the weight and construction of the insignia itself. This leads us to believe that the backing bar may be a replacement but we are not certain. Therefore, we are selling the piece AS IS at a fraction of its true value. The piece would most likely work as a knocker but would be better suited as a brass rendition of the US Marine Corp insignia in your collection. A nice and very unusual piece to add to your collection. Please see photo for additional condition information.
