Vintage Cast Iron Doorstop Punch and Judy Theme Judy Holding Punch with Cat at Her Side
Description: A very nice vintage cast iron doorstop. The doorstop is cast in the form of Judy sitting on a stool holding Punch and with their trusted cat at her side. Of course these two are from the well known puppet show originating in the traditional British seaside culture. The doorstop has a flat base and shows the details of the characters on one side and not on the back. Judy is wearing a long dress and a head cover, while punch has a pointed hat as usual. The pieces is unpainted, or may have been painted once but has lost its coloring since. It shows signs of soiling and minor surface rust signs here and there on the front but considerable on the bottom of the base. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely mid 20th century or possibly earlier.
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern, Pennsylvania, USA.
Size: Measures ~6 3/4" in height with the base measuring ~6 3/4" by ~1 5/8". The piece weighs 2 pounds and 7 ounces.
Marks: Has the number "4" stamped on the back, the letters "EMIG" to the left side of back the base, and the number "502 J" on the right side of the back of the base. See second photo.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and uncommon old doorstop. It weighs about 2.5 pounds and almost and in very good condition. A beautiful piece which would display very well in your collection of doorstops.
Condition: This doorstop is in very good condition with no breaks or repairs. It may have lost all of its original paint as it shows no coloring. It also shows minor signs of surface rust on the figure with considerable surface rust on the bottom of the base. This however, we feel can be cleaned if you so desire, but even if left alone would not affect the beauty or integrity of the piece. The piece is well soiled with imbedded dust throughout but again we believe it can be cleaned and we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. All of this does not distract from the piece's beauty. Please see photo for additional condition information.
