Vintage Figural Pottery Humidor or Tobacco Jar Bulldog Wearing Fez and Holding Beer Stein
Description: This is a very nice size vintage figural humidor in the form a bulldog dog standing and wearing a fez on its head while holding a beer stein in its hand. This pottery majolica humidor is mostly gray in color blue, purple, and brown highlights. The dog is wearing a gray-blue jacket and a short fez of the same color having a purple colored tassel. He has eyes with black pupils and ears having purple inside. The casting of this tobacco jar shows great details in the face and the clothing. It also depicts the tail, the toes, the wrinkling in the jacket, and in the dog's face. This pottery tobacco jar is glazed inside and out and shows great detail. The entire piece is made of pottery and the dog's head itself is the lid to the jar with a compartment where a wet sponge would go. This is a rather nice vintage Art Pottery Figural Humidor, which would make a great addition to your collection. Please review photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 1900s.
Origin: Purchased in an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: ~5 1/4" by 4 1/4" at the base and ~8" at its highest. The piece weighs slightly over two pounds two ounces.
Condition: Humidor is in great condition given its age and utilitarian function. It has no breaks, no chips, no hairlines and no repairs. It has general crazing to the glaze throughout but no losses to the glaze. The only thing we see is a small area along the edge of the bottom part (the body) where the head would rest that appears to be defect in casting and shows up in the form of minor roughness (see the seventh photo). Be that as it may, this does not distract from the beauty of the piece and the piece looks great. The piece is unusual, great looking and rather scarce. Please see photos for additional condition information.
