Vintage German Oval Snuff Box 800 Silver Crescent Moon and Crown Hallmark "H" Maker Mark
Description: A beautiful vintage oval silver snuffbox or snuff box with a hinged lid. This silver box has a design showing raised large smooth areas surrounded by beaded borders again of raised hammered design both on top of the lid and the sides of the box. While the sides show raised circles, the top of the lid shows a central oval surrounded by four sided shapes arranged around the center. The lid has a protruding thumb piece on the front. The bottom of the box is flat, smooth, and undecorated. The inside has a light golden coloring and is smooth showing the reverse of the exterior design. The front edge of the lid is fully hallmarked showing the number 800 followed by a crescent moon then a crown with a cross on top all of which is followed by the letter H having a curved line on top. Research of the marks suggest they are German and were used starting the late 1888. A nice old silver box to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 1900s, but could be earlier
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Most likely of German origin.
Size: Measures ~2 3/8" by ~1 1/2" and is ~3/4" in height. The piece weighs slightly less than one ounce.
Marks: Marked with the number 800 followed by a crescent moon then a crown with a cross on top and having the letter H with a curved line on top to the left of the marks in a separate rectangle (see last photo).
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is definitely a nice old silver snuff box, which deserves a spot in your small box collection.
Condition: Box is in good condition with no cracks, breaks, losses or repairs. The hinge is intact and works well. The box closes well, but lid is a bit distorted and does not sit flush on the edge of the box as can be seen in the second photo. This most likely due to the fact that the box appears to have been hit on the top at the left and this dented the lid (see photos) and caused the lid to slightly bend upwards. Be that as it may this is a nice old box to add to your collection. It could probably use a good cleaning, but we leave that to the next owner. Please carefully examine the photos for additional condition information.
