Vintage La Pierre Manufacturing Co. Sterling Silver Cigarette Case Monogrammed on Back Repousse Setter Dog on Front

Description: This is a vintage and rather substantial sterling silver cigarette case. The case depicts a repousse design showing a setter dog on the lid with highly detailed features. The dog is running and turning with a tree in the background and plants at its feet. A beautiful design depicting one of the most admired dog breeds; a setter. The case has a slightly curved profile. The back of the box has what we believe are the initials PHS engraved in a very decorative pattern. The interior of the box has a gilt finish and a metal clip to hold the cigarettes in place. The piece has a pressure operated locking/opening mechanism with a thumb piece. This is a rather heavy piece (weighs ~95 grams or about 3 troy ounces of sterling silver) which feels great in your hand. The piece is marked on the thumb piece with La Pierre Manufacturing Company mark "L" and the word STERLING next to it. A very well made vintage cigarette case with a great design. Please view photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 1900's.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was made in New York City.

Size: Measures ~3" by ~2 1/2" and is 1/2" deep. The piece weighs about 88 grams or a bit over 2.8 troy ounces.

Maker: La Pierre Manufacturing Company.

Marks: Marked on the thumb piece with "L STERLING" (see last photo).

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful and most interesting vintage piece with a great design that is very well done. This is a piece worthy of a spot in your collection of sterling silver boxes or cigarette cases.

Condition: The box is in very good condition with no breaks, or repairs. The hinge is intact and works very well so does the locking mechanism and the box closes tightly. The interior is clean, in excellent general condition and retains all of its original gilt but shows some minor dark spots/stains. The exterior has general surface scratches and a few minor dings most pronounced is the one in the right bottom corner and the other is below the thumb piece both on the back (see the second photo). The piece shows a small gap between the two halves when close (see the 4th photo). Be that as it may the piece is in great condition for being over 50 years old and having been in use for probably a long time. The piece could probably use a good cleaning, which we leave to the new owner. A great apiece which very seldom comes by in such a good condition. Please see photos for additional condition information.
