Vintage Maclaren's Imperial Cheese Milk Glass Container Gorham Sterling Silver Lid and Basket

  • $ 137.77

Description: A very nice vintage sterling silver basket with a milk glass cheese container. The glass container also has a sterling lid with a central finial. Both the lid and basket are marked for Gorham Sterling Silver. The milk glass container has markings indicating that it contained cheese. It is marked Maclaren's Imperial Cheese on the bottom in raised lettering. The sterling silver basket has a handle and also a small appendage where we assume a cheese serving implement would fit. This implement is no longer with the piece and we do not have it. The sterling is tarnished and would benefit from a good cleaning but we leave that to the new owner. A beautiful piece which would make a great addition to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Unknown but most likely mid 20th century based on the markings on both the basket and lid.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The milk glass cheese container is ~2 3/4" in diameter at the top, is ~2 5/8" high and weighs 6 ounces. The sterling basket ~2 7/8" in diameter at the top and ~2 1/8" in diameter at the bottom and is ~2 1/2" high while the lid is ~2 3/8" in diameter and both sterling pieces weigh ~83.3 grams or ~2.7 troy ounces. The entire piece weighs ~9 ounces.

Maker: Gorham.

Marks: The milk glass container is marked "Maclaren's Imperial Cheese" on the bottom in raised lettering. The sterling silver container is marked with the Gorham marks of a lion passant, anchor and the letter G, the word STERLING and the number A6498. The lid has similar markings as the basket except for the number which is 1827D on the external edge of the lid (see the photos presented).

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice piece, which would make a great addition to your collection of sterling silver containers.

Condition: The piece is excellent condition with minimum wear. The glass insert is intact with no cracks, chips, or repairs. The sterling basket and lid are also in very good condition with no breaks, losses or repairs. They are both intact with no dings. They are both tarnished and could use a good cleaning, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. The piece must have had a cheese serving implement which would have fit into the small open loop to the side of the basket at the top. This serving piece is lost and we do not have it. The various components of the piece have a few scratches and minor stains. However, these do not affect the beauty or quality of the piece. Please see photos for additional condition information.
