Vintage Painted Bent Wood Box Floral Decoration on Yellow Background Lift Off Lid
Description: Vintage folk art, American, rather large round bentwood or band box. This Shaker type box is a vintage reproduction of antique bentwood decorated pantry or sawing boxes, which were mad in the mid 1800s in the Mid Atlantic region of the United States and were treasured by the Pennsylvania Dutch people. The box has a lift-off lid and is made of bentwood. The top of the lid is decorated with a floral design consisting of two bright red flowers with branches showing green leaves and red berries. The sides are also decorated with a nice floral design which looks like stylized tulips. The entire box is a beautiful dark yellow colored with scalloped brown line boarder at the edge of the lid and the side of the lid. There is a repeating decorative motif, maybe leaves, along the side of the box. The box was obviously covered with gesso then painted in these antique type colors. The bottom as well as the interior of the box are not painted and shows the wood grain and suggests that the box has some age to it. The box is constructed using either nails or pegs with squared heads that have been painted over and as such we are not certain. The inside is clean and it is held together with the nails or wooden pegs as are the top and bottom. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Early to mid 20th century
Origin: USA, probably Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The box is 8 1/2" in diameter at the base, 8 3/4" in diameter for the lid and is 4 1/4" high with the lid on.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice vintage piece of Americana.
Condition: The box is in very good condition. the box is all together with minimum losses of paint. All the pegs or nails holding it are there and in place with one or two coming out a little bit. The box has a couple of stains (one is particularly large) on top of the lid which can clearly be seen in the photos. The box has an old and slightly musty odor inside it, again suggesting that this is an older box. Other than that the piece is nice and has no observable problems. This is a charming box which would be a very nice decorative accent in your country home or a great addition to your collection of Americana.
In Closing: Please see photos to appreciate the beauty and condition of this piece. This is truly a nice piece and would make a great addition to any collection.
