Vintage Painted Cast Iron Bookends White Horses Grazing with Brown Saddles
Description: A pair of vintage painted cast iron bookends. The bookends depict a white colored horse standing on all four with its head to the ground obviously grazing. The horse has a brown colored saddle on its back and is standing on all four on a textured brown colored base having what looks like grass blades all colored in brown. It is not certain whether the grass blades were always brown or have lost their green coloring over time. The casting of the bookends is very well done and shows great details. The pieces are well painted and still retain quite a bit of their original paint (>90%). The bookends have a textured brown colored back and are unmarked. A nice set of bookends worthy of a spot in your collection or on your shelves. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime in the early to mid 20th century.
Origin: Purchased in an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: Measures ~3 3/4" high and the base is ~4 1/8" by ~1 1/4". The pair weighs over 1 pound and 15 ounces.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice pair of bookends with a beautiful and very desirable design. A beautiful set of bookends, which deserve a spot in your collection or on your shelves.
Condition: The bookends are in very good condition with no breaks, repairs, or dings that we could find. They have losses to the paint but still retain most of its original paint (>90%). It is not certain whether the grass blades the horse is eating were always brown or have lost their green coloring over time. Both pieces are soiled, have signs of rust especially on the bottom of the base, and would likely benefit from a good cleaning but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. The bookends are great looking and would make an excellent addition to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition details.
