Vintage Painted Cast Iron Decorative Thermometer By Hubley Colorful Flowers
Description: Vintage painted cast iron thermometer made by the Hubley Co. of Lancaster Pennsylvania. The thermometer which on a painted wooden backing is glued within a cast iron frame. The frame has flowers all around with a hole on the top to hang from. The flowers are white, yellow, green and blue. The thermometer which is attached to the wooden backing, has red colored indicator and is graduated in Fahrenheit degrees with indication as to what the temperatures indicate about the weather. Unfortunately those are difficult to read because they are hidden by the cast iron frame. Be that as it may, this is a beautiful piece which is different, unusual and would look great in your collection or hanging on your wall. Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 1900's.
Origin: Was purchased at an estate sale in Southeast Pennsylvania. Made in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Size: The piece measures ~6 1/4" long, ~2 1/8" at its widest point and weighs a bit over 7 ounces.
Marks: Marked "LVL" and the words "PAT APPLD FOR" on the back along the edge of the cast iron portion.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice decorative piece, which would definitely make an interesting addition to your collection or for use to decorate your home.
Condition: The piece is in excellent condition given its age and utilitarian function. The piece is all original with no breaks or losses. You can obviously see that the thermometer portion was re-glued and you can see the glue residue. The piece probably had a material backing covering the back, which is long gone. The piece has some losses to the paint. These are minimal and the piece retains most of its original paint. It is all original and looks great. Please see photos for additional condition information.
