Vintage Papago or Tohono O'Odham Indian Nice Size Deep Basket Human Figures Design By Rosita Stien at Big Field

Description: A beautiful nice size genuine Papago (also known as Tohono O'Odham) Indian Basket (Native American). This deep basket has a flat round base with straight upwards flared sides rising to a high of 5 1/2 inches and ending in a decorated rim. The basket is made of braided grass and is beautifully shaped with the sides having decoration depicting three human figures (possibly women) with their arms to their sides and head covers made of darker plant material (grass). The rim of the basket is highlighted with darker (almost black or dark brown) grass in a nice slanted pattern. These basket were handcrafted in Arizona by tribal artisans and come with paper tags signed by the artisan and describing the material used as well as how the basket is made. Date: Uncertain but most likely mid to late 1900s.

Origin: Papago or Tohono O'Odham tribe of Arizona, USA

Size: The base of the basket is ~6 1/8" in diameter and the top is ~9 1/4" in diameter, while the basket measures 5 1/2" in height. This beautiful basket weighs almost one pound.

Maker: Rosita Stein.

Marks: Has original tag attached signed Rosita Stien at Big Field and indicating the basket is made as part of the Papago Indian Self-help Program.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice large piece of Native American basketry with very nice, unusual and colorful design.

Condition: The basket is in very good condition, given its age and utilitarian function, with no breaks or repairs. It does have some minor soiling. It also has the normal issues you would expect of a handmade piece like this such as obvious grass ends, a loose edge of a grass strand, and occasional weaving error. Be that as it may, the piece is absolutely beautiful and in great shape. Just a great piece to add to your collection. Please review the photos for additional condition information.
