Vintage Pewter Ice Cream Mold Unusual Lion Sitting Marked 166
Description: A very nice and rather unusual pewter ice cream mold in the form of an sitting in a typical lion pose. The mold is made of two separate halves held together with a hinge. Each half has a thumb piece at the edge to allow you to pry the mold open once the ice cream hardens. The inside of the mold shows a clean and smooth design on both halves. The inside of the mold shows the shiny design of the lion sitting down with its tail to one side. The mold also shows the head of the lion with its eyes and mouth. The mold also shows a textured surface of the lion's mane as well as the toes in the bottom of its legs. The design shows great details and looks rather nice. It is marked with the number 166 on the outside. The piece has a flat base to stand on. The two halves close tightly and fit together very well. Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 20th century.
Origin: Was purchased at an estate auction in Southern New Jersey. Size:The base measures ~3 5/8" by ~1 3/4" and the piece is ~3" high. The mold weighs a bit over 11 ounces.
Marks: Marked with the number166 on the exterior of one of the two halves. It has no other markings.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice and rather unusual and rare piece to be used to make ice cream or candy treats. , We have been collecting and dealing in these molds for many years and this is the first time we see this shape. It is really very interesting and would make a great addition to your collection.
Condition: It is in excellent condition. The piece closes very well and the two halves fit together very well. It is a nice piece and would display very well in your collection. The inside is clean and the design is intact and looks great. The piece has some general wear mostly on the exterior commensurate with its age and utilitarian function. The outside is soiled, has scratches, dings, and dust which could probably benefit from a good cleaning, but we leave that to discretion of the next owner.
