Vintage Salesman Sample Advertising Thermometer Sample No. 2805 Missouri Oil Co.

This product is currently sold out.

Description: This is what we believe is a salesman sample of an advertising thermometer. This thermometer is Sample No. 2805. It has a black painted tin case with a graduated flat off-white metal backing that is graduated and has a thermometer attached to it. The piece has a round loop on top to hang from. The case has a top and bottom cover. Where the bottom cover is probably to protect the reservoir of the thermometer, we are not certain why the top cover, except that it may have been an extra to help in the manufacture of the case. We believe this piece was from a company that made these thermometers and has a fictitious company name (Missouri Oil Co. Stove and Furnace Oil-Riv.6802) to show to potential customers what his advertising thermometer would look like. A very interesting piece to add to your collection. Please see photos as they are part and parcel of the description.

Date: Uncertain but most likely late 1940s or a little later.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southern New Jersey.

Size: The piece measures ~10 5/8"long including the hanging loop, ~2" at its widest. The piece weighs slightly over 4 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked as to the maker.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and unusual piece to add to your collection.

Condition: The piece is in very good condition with no breaks, repairs, losses or major objectionable damage. The black colored metal case has losses of paint and rust spots. The off-white thermometer backing has rust spots and some minor losses to the coloring. The piece is fairly soiled and could probably use a good cleaning, but we leave that to the new owner. The thermometer is intact and still well in place with the metal straps holding it in place showing signs of rust and some soiling along the glass thermometer itself. The thermometer appears to accurately reflect the surrounding temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. All in all the piece looks great and would make a great addition to your collection. Again please see the photos to appreciate the beauty of the piece and for additional condition information.
