Vintage Weighted Carved Wood and Metal Painted Working Fish Decoy Glass Eyes
Description: A very nice vintage weighted working fish decoy made of wood with metal fins, having glass eyes, and weighted with what we believe is lead. This decoy appears to be carved of wood and is painted in green and gray with pink, white and black dots along the sides. The tail is also colored in a light green with black lines as highlights. The decoy has 6 metal fins, the four in the back are of ferrous material as they stick to a magnet while the front two are non-ferrous. The fins are painted but they lost some of the paint especially along the edges. All six fins are secured in the wooden body. The piece has red gills and yellow and black glass eyes. The fish has a metal loop on the top to hang from. The fish has a slight curvature near the tail with its bottom of the fish is painted in the gray coloring and shows that there is material that is inserted into the wood to give the piece a nice weight. The material which we believe is lead has been painted over but you still can see its outline. The bottom also has a red painted line to suggest gills. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain, but most likely sometime in the mid 20th century.
Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: Measures ~5 1/4" long, ~2" at its widest (at the front fins), and about ~1 1/2" at its highest (where the back fin is located). The piece weighs about 2.6 ounces.
